The European

Rating 1

ONE GLASS RATING: Over 20 wines by-the-glass

Experience: Relaxed & Social

Specialist in: Burgundy | Champagne | Italy | Rhône

Sitting opposite the Victorian grandeur of Parliament House, our restaurant has gained iconic status amongst Melbournians and visitors alike. Reminiscent of old-world Europe, the European honours the traditions of rural France, Italy and Spain.

The European Restaurant offers twenty-one wines by the glass, with a general focus on representing Old World wines, albeit with a selection of New World wines that stylistically emulate the Old World in structure and feel. The venue was founded in 1998 and has always had a deep list of older vintages of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Francois Raveneau, and Giacomo Conterno.

GLASS HIGHLIGHTS

Subject to availability*

2023 St. JOHNS Bordeaux Blanc (Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc)

A wine we imported from our friends at the famous St John restaurant in London. a typical cepage of Sauvignon Blanc 58%, and Sémillon 42%. The wine was whole bunch pressed and fermented exclusively in stainless steel, presumably to
retain freshness. The nose presents a lovely combination of tropical and fresh notes, epitomised by primary marks of guava, lemon myrtle, crushed stones, paw paw, passionfruit, melon rind, and yellow daffodils.

2016 Amirault ‘Le Fondis’ St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil (Cabernet Franc)

True to form, Cabernet Franc from deep gravel soils to the west of Saint-Nicolas, Loire Valley. Deep red berry fruit, supported by taut acidity, subtle black tea-like tannins, all wrapped by vegetal herbal notes.

2012 La Castellada ‘Rosso Della Castellada’ (Cab Sauv/Merlot)

A completely overlooked region for Bordeaux varietals, produced on true Ponca, or technically known as flysch soils. 85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon wine from Friuli Venezia Giulia. perfectly proportioned core of briary red fruit, with cedar and tobacco, and gravely tannins.
