Penny Roma brings the simplicity and conviviality of traditional Italian dining to San Francisco’s Mission District. An inviting dining room and indoor/outdoor courtyard with a truly Californian vibe, a large open kitchen and a backdrop of whole-album playlists. We want to throw a dinner party every night and invite you to come share a meal and feel welcome in our space.

FWHG Beverage Director Samuel Bogue has created an eccentric yet unpretentious and approachable wine list balancing classic and natural wines from Italy, California and unique growing regions from around the world.

Hammerling, Sparkling Red, 'Big Night', California '24

Our house sparkling red wine is made in collaboration with Berkeley-based winemaker Josh Hammerling. With Lambrusco as our North Star, this complex sparkling wine begins as a base of Pinot Noir and Gamay, then is finished using the méthode champenoise. Dry and fruit-forward, yet balanced by notes of herbs, cracked pepper, and purple flowers, it’s a natural foil for a rich plate of pasta at Penny Roma.

Villagrande, Carricante, Etna, Sicily, Italy '24

Etna Bianco is a cornerstone of our wine programs, especially at Penny Roma, where it shines alongside many of our crudi. Barone de Villagrande is a multi-generation family estate producing some of the best price-to-quality wines on Mount Etna. Saline and flinty, layered with Mediterranean herbs, the wine is brisk and lifted on the palate, with just enough texture to bring balance and depth.

Spring Mountain, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California '95

Direct from the cellar of a legendary Napa Valley estate, this wine tells a compelling story about the importance of provenance and proper storage. At 30 years of age, it feels remarkably untouched, marrying a savory edge with plush dark fruit, ample spice, and beautifully integrated oak. A truly rare treat, we purchased the remaining stock of this vintage to ensure a long and meaningful run on our by-the-glass list.

Sam Bogue is an award-winning Beverage Director who has led the Flour + Water Hospitality Group’s beverage program for 13 years. He champions character-driven, minimal intervention wines from tiny, independent producers. Most importantly, Sam believes wine should be fun, not fussy, and brings that spirit to every list he curates.
